NEUROCLIMA at Halfway: Pioneering Behavioural Change for a Climate-Resilient Europe
As NEUROCLIMA reaches its halfway milestone, it’s time to reflect on how far we have come and how we’re reshaping the way Europe approaches climate resilience. Funded under the Horizon Europe programme, NEUROCLIMA is building an AI-enhanced “nervous system” to connect policymakers, public institutions and citizens in a powerful two-way dialogue about climate adaptation.
In an era of climate urgency, polarised discourse, and fast-changing societal dynamics, our mission is clear to spark systemic transformations and empower citizens to become active participants in the green transition. At the heart of NEUROCLIMA is the development of a cutting-edge monitoring infrastructure, our Climate Nervous System. This system tracks public concerns, emerging trends, and discourses on climate change from across social and traditional media. By identifying social tipping points and leverage points, it helps decision-makers understand where small and targeted actions can trigger large-scale behavioural change. NEUROCLIMA also recognises that climate action isn’t just about data; it is about people. That is why we are designing and testing participatory toolkits that make climate adaptation personal, creative and engaging for students and citizens in Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Cyprus, Belgium and Greece.
Looking Ahead
As we move into the second half of NEUROCLIMA, our focus will shift to validating our tools, scaling their impact and embedding them within European policy ecosystems.
A major milestone on the horizon is the launch of our large-scale pilot actions in Spring 2026. These pilots will bring together policy makers, educators, students, journalists, citizens and community stakeholders across our partner countries to:
- Test the Climate Nervous System for real-time monitoring of climate discourse and public sentiment
- Trial our participatory design, creative writing and arts-based toolkits in diverse educational and civic settings
- Implement AI-driven storytelling platforms, gamified learning tools and interactive engagement strategies to boost climate literacy and participation
- Evaluate how these combined approaches can influence policies, trigger behavioural shifts and build social tipping points toward climate resilience
The pilots will be a pivotal opportunity to demonstrate NEUROCLIMA’s full innovation ecosystem in action and gather robust evidence on its effectiveness. Following the pilots, we will publish policy briefs, best practice blueprints and exploitation strategies to support the adoption of NEUROCLIMA’s methods across Europe ensuring the project’s impact endures well beyond its lifetime.
